Central location
Shelter City hostel is located right in the middle of the oldest part of Amsterdam's city centre. The accommodation is very suitable for groups and individual travellers who want to explore Amsterdam. The old part of Amsterdam is very lively with many restaurants and cafes. The famous Red Light District is just around the corner (but can easily be avoided if you prefer).
The hostel is close to all the main tourist attractions of Amsterdam. Dam Square, Madame Tussauds, Rembrandt's house, canal tours, and the shopping centre are all within a 10 minute walk. Also the Amsterdam main train station is less than 10 minutes walk away.
Vincent van Gogh was a teacher in Shelter City when the building was a school and he was a young man.
International meeting point
Shelter City is very international, so you can meet people from all over the world. The hostel's cafe and courtyard with its huge fish pond are great places to hang out and meet fellow travellers. You will feel right at home in this accommodation. The hostel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and attracts a friendly crowd of backpackers. There are 176 beds in rooms with 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 beds so you can choose for a bit more privacy or a chance to make new friends. All the rooms are single-sex and the larger ones have dividing walls between the beds. The 4-bedded en-suite rooms have a private shower and toilet in the room, for the rest of the rooms the toilets and showers are shared with other guests. There is one locker for each bed, sometimes in the room itself, sometimes in the hallway outside the room. Some need your own padlock, some have a lock built into them and you pay a deposit to borrow the key.
Fun and games, or spiritual reflection
There are always things going on which you can join in with: whether that's a free meal, a Dutch night, a movie discussion or just a random game of chess, Risk, table-football or table-tennis. You are very welcome to hang out in the cafe all day and join in with these activities, write in your journal, or take the time to read a Christian book from the library. There are internet computers and WIFI access, plus loads of information about Amsterdam and ideas to fill your days. If you want the true Dutch experience then you can rent a bike from reception or buy a discount ticket for a boat tour along the canals. All the staff speak English and would love to chat with you about your journey - whether that's physical or spiritual.

We have just finished major renovations to modernise and improve our facilities and now have many more smaller rooms (4-6 beds), mostly with en-suite facilities!
